Do you tend to have dental anxiety or feel nervous about visiting the dentist? If so, then you may benefit from dental sedation, as this treatment helps keep you relaxed throughout your appointment. However, there are still misconceptions about what you should expect from this therapy which can make you hesitate to schedule a visit. Read on to learn four common dental sedation myths and why you won’t have anything to worry about!

Myth #1: It’s Highly Addictive

One of the most popular forms of sedation is nitrous oxide. This substance can make you feel calmer during your treatment. While it is considered a drug, it isn’t physically addictive! As long as you’re being supervised by a qualified dental professional, you’ll be safe and comfortable while undergoing a checkup or other kind of treatment.

Myth #2: You’ll Be Laughing Uncontrollably

Nitrous oxide is also widely known as “laughing gas.” However, you likely won’t expect to be laughing like a hyena while sitting in the dentist’s chair. This sedation is merely meant to help you relax and lower your anxiety. You’ll still be conscious, responsive, and completely in control of yourself!

Myth #3: The Effects Take a Long Time to Wear Off

Unlike local anesthetic, which relieves discomfort and can stay in your system for a few hours after you leave your appointment, nitrous oxide can wear off rather quickly. This odorless and tasteless drug will typically lose its effect within 15 to 30 minutes of not being inhaled into your system. This means you’ll be able to drive yourself to and from your dental visit while being fully awake.

Myth #4: It’s Similar to a Truth Serum

Since you’ll remain conscious and in control of yourself, you won’t have to worry about spilling personal secrets to your dentist or dental team. Any conversations you hold during your appointment will be deliberate and mainly about your oral and overall well-being. You may feel a little more friendly due to increased comfortability, and there’s nothing wrong with having a nice chat while you’re getting treatment!

With sedation therapy, you can expect a calm and safe experience while getting the dental care you deserve. Feel free to speak with your dentist if you still have any concerns, and they’ll be more than happy to answer your questions.
